ASTM A453 Bolt Material Properties

High-Temperature Bolting with Expansion Comparable to Austenitic Stainless Steels

About

ASTM A453 covers high-temperature bolting materials with coefficients of thermal expansion comparable to austenitic stainless steels. These materials are used where differential thermal expansion between the bolt and the flange must be minimized, such as stainless steel pressure vessels and heat exchangers. The table below contains data from Table 5 of ASTM A453/A453M.

Grade 660 (UNS S66286, also known as A-286) is the most commonly used grade. Other grades include 651, 662, 665, and 668, each with different strength and hardness characteristics.

How to Use This Chart

To find the mechanical properties for a specific bolt, select the grade using the dropdown filter above. Each grade may have multiple classes (A, B, C, D) with different property requirements.

Key columns explained:

  • Tensile Strength (ksi) — the minimum ultimate tensile strength the bolt must achieve.
  • Yield Strength (ksi) — the minimum stress at which the bolt begins to deform permanently (0.2% offset method).
  • Brinell Hardness — the allowable hardness range in Brinell hardness numbers (HB).
  • Rockwell Hardness — the allowable hardness range in Rockwell C (HRC) or Rockwell B (HRB) scale.
