Oil & Gas Industry Flanges

Flange Specifications for Upstream, Midstream, and Downstream Operations

Overview

Flanges in the oil and gas industry must withstand high pressures, corrosive fluids, and extreme temperatures. The sector is governed by both API and ASME codes, with specific standards for each segment of the value chain. Proper flange selection is critical to maintaining joint integrity and preventing leaks in environments where failure can have catastrophic consequences.

Upstream — Wellhead & Production

Upstream operations involve the highest pressures in the oil and gas industry. Wellhead and christmas tree connections use API 6A flanges rated from 2,000 to 20,000 psi working pressure. Ring-type joint (RTJ) facings with metallic ring gaskets are the standard sealing method for these high-pressure connections.

Common materials include AISI 4130, F22 (2-1/4 Cr-1 Mo), and nickel alloys such as Inconel 625 and 718 for sour service and extreme environments. Material selection must account for NACE MR0175 requirements when hydrogen sulfide is present.

Midstream — Pipelines & Compression

Midstream pipeline flanges typically follow ASME B16.5 (NPS 1/2 through 24) and ASME B16.47 (NPS 26 through 60). Weld neck flanges are the standard choice for mainline pipeline connections due to their superior strength and fatigue resistance at the pipe-to-flange junction.

High-yield A694 flanges are specified to match the strength of X-grade pipeline steels (X52, X65, X70, X80). Compressor station flanges must handle pulsating pressures and vibration, making weld neck flanges with proper bolt torque essential.

Downstream — Refining & Processing

Downstream refining operations use the full range of ASME B16.5 pressure classes from 150 through 2500. The variety of process conditions in a refinery demands careful material selection for each service.

Chrome-molybdenum alloys (F11, F22) are standard for high-temperature hydroprocessing units. Austenitic stainless steels (F304, F316) are used in corrosive streams. Duplex stainless steels may be specified for chloride-containing environments or where higher strength is needed.

Common Standards

  • API 6A — Wellhead and christmas tree equipment, including flanges rated 2,000–20,000 psi
  • API 605 — Large-diameter carbon steel flanges (NPS 26 through 60)
  • ASME B16.5 — Pipe flanges and flanged fittings NPS 1/2 through 24
  • ASME B16.47 — Large-diameter steel flanges NPS 26 through 60
  • MSS SP-44 — Steel pipeline flanges
